If you do not have the cards for a major play, it is still wholly worthwhile to consolidate your position by putting down bridges on islands you already control. That way, you will retain control even if you lose some. Do not be afraid to pass and just draw cards very early in the game. It forces your opponent to show you where she's starting to build up before she can get down enough bridges to dominate. When going on the offensive, make sure you have got all the cards you need to destroy enemy bridges and replace some with your own before starting. Otherwise, your enemy will often just quickly rebuild what you have worked hard to destroy.
