You need to go towards the Christmas tree (without being killed by the eagle that swoops down if you don't move for 5 or more seconds) and go towards the gifts. Getting the gifts is what you do to receive the character. You can die on purpose then, or continue, but you will still get Gifty. Gifty is a wrapped gift with a bow with legs. He has speed like the others and is a bit bigger than the Fast Tortoise.
