You do need more energy for the whales but when they come around tap them 9,000-10,000 coins and a pearl or two is great. To get free rubies , do the mermaid searches at the cheapest price (best to do it at low level to save money). So about every 20 spins you get a free spin, so use the far most right spinner and you get rubies no problem.
