When you first arrive in Sandheim with Jerald, you should notice a tent in the town's southeast corner, to the west of the bridge. There will be a man playing a game with his back to you. Pick his pocket to earn 100GP, then exit town. You can then return and pick his pockets again as often as you like, which makes it easy to raise funds for any gear you might want to buy before attempting available missions.
