Technically, you can tap the brake to more easily negotiate a tough portion of the course, but that's the sort of thinking that will prevent you from crossing the finish line first. Usually, the answer is to merely ease off the accelerator. There's a subtle difference there, but it's enough to prevent you from losing momentum and that matters a lot. In some areas, you may encounter a series of small bumps. Raise your wheel slightly as you pass along that obstacle and you'll barely slow at all, whereas braking on your way through can drop your speed quite a bit. You'll need to be careful on the other side of that hazard, of course, but you'll do find if you're mindful of wheel position and you can use each such opportunity to gain on any opponents who haven't realized yet that brakes are for suckers.
