Tapping loot after you open a chest or removing a dirt tile consumes air. Just wait for the loot to drop and move your character over it to collect it. If a chest appears behind a wall, you can still tap it to open it. Then, tap the items to pick them up. This can even be done while you are out of air. You only use air when you move your character or drill, not when you shoot.
