The number of stars at the top of the screen indicated your wanted level by the police.

One star: Only a few police cars will chase you.
Two stars: More police cars will join the chase.
Three stars: Police vans will appear and road blocks will be put into place.
Four stars: Military Humvees, which can take your car out in one shot will appear.
